CMPによる平坦化は何層にもなっているナノスケールの電子回路の要所要所で繰り返し行わなければなりません。例えば下記の電子顕微鏡像のFig.2(c)の平坦な界面はCMPで作られていると思います。

砥粒やさまざまな化学物質を含むスラリーで擦ったあと、完全に除去して次の製膜プロセス、リソグラフィプロセスを行わなければなりません。どうやってスラリーを除去するのでしょうか。これは日本企業が得意としている部分で、現在ではクリーンルーム内に置いたCMP装置にウェファを入れると自動で洗浄・乾燥までやって出てくるそうです。

そこで出てくる、ポリビニールアルコール製のスポンジローラーでこすって洗浄するところは驚きます。ポリビニールアルコール（低分子量のものは合成糊です）は水に溶けますが、ローラーはほとんど溶出しないとのこと。ちょっと粘りがでるところがいいのかもしれません。おそらくCMPの実験に使うと思うのでスポンジを買ってみましょう。
