… Is the nature in this poem real? Hardly. This garden, as the gardens of the Generalife in Granada, as in another place, but not that different a time the exquisite temple gardens of Kyoto, these gardens are the supreme artifice. In them are constructed canals, fountains, and pools. In them grow imported exotic plants, the best manicured moss in the world, and tamed creatures. It is not at all out of place in this beautiful garden of the mind (and yet a real garden!) for flowers to speak. But then, in the very last line, the poet stills this exuberant beauty by Joshua’s injunction for the sun to stand still. This is a Jewish turn. Does the poet do so out of desire to make the moment last forever? Or is it in rebuke? Maybe both interpretations have validity.
